Shane Mengel is a senior investment professional in the alternative asset management sector where he spent more than 20 years focused on leveraged finance and managing investment portfolios across the below investment grade corporate credit spectrum.
In 2016, Shane founded a private investment vehicle, Morgan Hunter Capital LLC (“MHC”), to deploy capital into debt and private equity opportunities. MHC has closed investments in the disruptive spirits, fintech, micro-brewery, mobile home / RV park, oil & gas, real estate, restaurant and travel-led video industries. MHC is also expanding to provide various consulting services to family offices including sourcing and vetting private investment deal flow.
Prior to founding MHC, Shane had a 17-year career at Ares Management (“Ares”, the “Firm”) after joining the Firm’s Tradable Credit Group (“TCG”) in 1999. He subsequently served as Co-Head of Credit Research for TCG whereby he oversaw a team of approximately 40 credit analysts and all related research activities in Los Angeles and London. While in this capacity, he also managed a portfolio of leveraged loans, high yield bonds and post-reorganization equities exceeding $2 billion across all of TCG's credit investment strategies, which spanned Collateralized Loan Obligations (“CLO”s), long-only leveraged loans and high yield bonds, dynamic allocation, credit hedge funds and distressed/special situations. Shane most recently focused on investments within cyclical commodity sectors including chemicals and metals & mining, but covered many industries during his tenure with the Firm and participated in Investment Committee for all TCG investments across all strategies. For two years prior to his departure from Ares in 2016, Shane was a Client Portfolio Manager, where in this capacity he led a new effort to expand TCG’s business development activities with consultants and family offices.
Prior to MHC and Ares, Shane worked at Pricewaterhouse LLP in the Transaction Services practice of Los Angeles where he directed due diligence engagements for clients and in the Business Assurance practice of Grant Thornton LP and AG Epstein in Philadelphia.
Shane serves as a Board Advisor to FinDox, a fintech startup, and an Advisory Committee member for Brouwerij West, a micro-brewery based in southern California. He is also a Board of Directors and Finance/Audit Committee Member of the Ruffed Grouse and American Woodcock Societies, two conservation organizations founded in 1961 and focused on creating healthier forests for an abundance of wildlife.
In 1994 Shane graduated from Villanova University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy and remains involved with his alma mater through the Undergraduate Mentor Program at the Villanova School of Business and the broader University’s Alumni Interview Program for scholarship applicants.
